Three times the light.

A south-facing roof aperture admits roughly three times the daylight of a vertical window of the same area. The sun does not pass over a wall — it passes over a roof.

A room with a roof aperture is a room that reads the sky. Cloud, rain, the morning's first blue, the long evenings — the room becomes a quiet record of the day.

Hot air collects at the highest point of a room. An openable roof aperture vents that heat by convection alone — and reduces the need for mechanical cooling by up to thirty-eight percent in summer.
